Projects
- Huang, Jianglin (Principal Investigator) Yang, Erfu (Co-investigator) Rahimi, Salaheddin (Co-investigator)
- The "AI Surrogate Modelling to Enhance the Digital Twin of Titanium Cogging" is a fully funded PhD project at the University of 海角论坛, linked with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Materials 4.0 and the Henry Royce Institute.
The research unites physics-based modelling, machine learning, and experimental validation. It is designed to tackle the computationally intensive nature of physical simulations in heavy manufacturing.
Key aspects of this research include:
1) Digital Twin Advancement: The project develops rapid predictive models to simulate the hot forging and cogging of titanium.
2) The FutureForge Facility: The research applies these surrogate models directly to real-world data generated by the FutureForge platform, which is a pioneering hot forging research facility located at 海角论坛's Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC).
3) Optimization and Speed: Machine learning (surrogate) models act as fast, mathematical stand-ins for heavy Finite Element Analysis (FEA), enabling real-time decision support, microstructural prediction, and process optimization without standard computational delays. - 01-Jan-2026 - 30-Jan-2030
- Javadi, Yashar (Principal Investigator) MacLeod, Charles Norman (Co-investigator) Buffa, Gianluca (Co-investigator) Tamimi, Saeed (Co-investigator) Rahimi, Salaheddin (Co-investigator) Paradowska, Anna (Co-investigator) Alipooramirabad, Houman (Co-investigator)
- This collaborative study between ANSTO, University of Palermo, University of 海角论坛, and AFRC investigates residual stresses in aluminum components produced via WAAM and AFSD (including MELD). Using neutron diffraction and ultrasonic techniques, the project aims to characterize and compare stress profiles across processes. The findings will inform process optimization and contribute to a doctoral thesis on in-situ stress measurement in metal additive manufacturing.

- Rolls-Royce have approached the AFRC with a request to participate in their Building Engineering capability in Titanium Alloys (BETA) project proposal, bidding in to the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) strategic funding programme. This proposal aims to accelerate the evaluation and exploitation of the latest titanium alloys alongside design and manufacturing processes to enable the realisation of large, ultra-high bypass ratio engines. This technology is directly aligned to the ATI strategic theme of 'Propulsion of the future - realisation of large ultra-high bypass ratio (UHBR) turbofan engines'. Project value: 拢600,000

- The project aThe instrument is a Benchtop X-Ray Diffractometer, which is a device that can analyse the structure and composition of various materials. It can provide data on crystal and molecular structure, phase identification and quantification, and crystallite size and strain. It is suitable for a wide range of inorganic and organic materials in different forms, such as powders, films, or solids. The instrument is compact, fast, easy to use, and low-cost, making it ideal for routine and high-throughput analysis. It can support research in many fields, such as materials science, engineering, chemistry, energy, and healthcare.
The instrument was acquired through an EPSRC Core Equipment fund, with an internally allocated 拢64k from the University of 海角论坛 - 01-Jan-2023

- Residual Stress (RS) in engineering components yields unexpected and dangerous structural 鈥巉ailures, and thus 鈥巖epresents a significant challenge to quality assurance in both welding and metal 鈥嶢dditive Manufacturing 鈥庘(AM) processes. As automation in welding and AM becomes increasingly 鈥巔revalent in the Industry 4.0 鈥巑anufacturing paradigm, so the importance of quantifying RS will 鈥巊row. In this PhD project, a novel robotic 鈥巙ltrasonic approach to measuring such RS, in-situ, will be developed using the Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing 鈥庘(PAUT) system, to automate the deployment of the 鈥巑easurement in manufacturing applications. For the first 鈥巘ime, it will allow truly in-situ 鈥巑easurements of RS to be undertaken at the elevated temperatures associated 鈥巜ith welding and 鈥巑etal AM manufacture. The ambition is to use this in-situ measurement system for safety-鈥巆ritical and Industry 4.0 applications, through 5G wireless integration of the robotic system, where the 鈥巆onventional manual and destructive methods of RS 鈥巑easurement are not applicable for high throughput and 鈥巃utomated production lines.鈥
