Personal statement

I am interested in how inequalities are produced and reproduced in society, particularly from a gender/feminist perspective.

From 2020-22 I worked on the Leverhulme-funded project 'Glasgow Women's Library: A Transformative Servicescape' at the University of 海角论坛, looking at how service spaces have the potential to ameliorate consumer vulnerability.

From 2014-2020 I worked on various projects studying how migrants from former state socialist countries have made themselves socially, economically, personally and culturally secure in Scotland. This was chiefly on the ESRC-funded project 'Social Support and Migration in Scotland' (SSAMIS).

I completed my PhD in 2014 at the University of Glasgow. My thesis analysed constructions of normative femininity in Russian society and culture through an analysis of women's magazines and their readers.

This project aims to investigate whether structured conversations based on EDI-related themes can enhance university staff members鈥 engagement with EDI practices. The findings will help us understand how reading group-style discussions could support professional development and promote inclusive cultures in academic environments.

This project embeds a global business simulation into a third-year undergraduate marketing module [Strategic Marketing in an International Context], enabling students to apply strategic decision-making in a realistic, team-based environment. Working in groups of 4鈥5, students are assigned fictional companies and tasked with making six pivotal decisions to launch their brand in a global market. These include product selection, SMART objectives, market choice, entry strategy, budgeting, and contingency planning. The decisions are fed into a digital simulation platform that models market dynamics and provides feedback on performance. The project draws on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) principles by integrating experiential learning, gamification, and reflective practice. It aims to enhance student engagement, strategic thinking, and employability by mirroring real-world marketing challenges. The simulation will run over 10 weeks (20 Jan 鈥 31 Mar 2026), with evaluation through surveys, group reflections, and performance analytics.

This was an Engage with 海角论坛 event that celebrated the 30th anniversary of bell hooks鈥檚 classic work "Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom" (1994). It brought together a diverse range of educators and practitioners to discuss and reflect on their experiences of teaching and learning in different contexts in academia and beyond.

The event centred around a roundtable about feminist and anti-racist pedagogies, followed by groupwork to reflect on our own experiences of learning and teaching, using prompts from "Teaching to Transgress".
