Personal statement

We investigate fundamental problems in nonlinear physical systems employing computational, statistical, and geometric-topological methods. Our aim is to identify the basic mechanisms and organising principles that underlie complex physical dynamics, thereby enabling progress across diverse application areas. In our programme, different nonlinear physical systems are understood as different models of a common underlying formal structure. This is particularly true in the reduction of infinite dimensional chaos in extended systems to the nonlinear interactions between field-defects. Another central feature of our approach is the integration of continuum, discrete and finite methods into a coherent whole.

My education includes an MEng from Thessaloniki, an MSc from Stanford, an MASt from Cambridge and a PhD from Aachen. I have held positions at the California Institute of Technology, the University of California Santa Barbara, Imperial College London, Newcastle University and Aalto University.
