Personal statement

I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Department of Government and Public Policy at the University of 海角论坛, working on international conflict and quantitative methodology.

My research has two connected strands. The first uses strategic models of conflict to understand bargaining, war, and how strategic behaviour changes when states act within dense networks of interdependence rather than in isolated pairs. The second develops network methods for inferring concealed alignments from observable behaviour: detecting shifts in state alignment from UN voting, trade and alliance data; measuring transnational repression from news reports; and identifying factional ties within the Chinese Communist Party. Across both, I pair theoretical models with rigorous empirical tests, and use prediction to detect when international politics is changing.

My work has appeared in the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, and the British Journal of Political Science, among other outlets. I received my PhD from Duke University in 2015.
