Teaching
My teaching interests lie in quantitative decision-making, business analytics, risk analysis, and the application of data-driven methods to management and organisational contexts. I am particularly interested in helping students develop the ability to translate analytical concepts into practical decision-support tools, while communicating insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Research Interests
My research focuses on the development and application of statistical learning methods to support decision-making in business, entrepreneurship, and economic policy. I am particularly interested in extracting interpretable signals from high-dimensional data sources, especially text, and evaluating the reliability and uncertainty of these signals when used in organisational and policy contexts.
A central theme of my work is understanding how narratives, discourse, and information environments influence economic and organisational outcomes. This includes methodological research on model stability and validation, as well as applied work integrating AI-derived indicators within econometric and decision-analytic frameworks. My research sits at the intersection of management science, data science, and applied econometrics, with applications in innovation, forecasting, and risk-informed decision support.

Projects
- Bueno Macedo Medeiros, Cynthia (Principal Investigator) MacInnes, Don (Co-investigator)
- Knowledge exchange activity focused on risk analysis for nuclear reactor deployment in Scotland, involving collaboration with external stakeholders to translate academic methods in risk and decision analysis into applied contexts. The activity resulted in the supervision of 11 commissioned postgraduate dissertation projects addressing real-world challenges related to nuclear reactor deployment, safety, and decision-making under uncertainty.
- 01-Jan-2024 - 01-Jan-2025
- Bueno Macedo Medeiros, Cynthia (Principal Investigator) MacInnes, Don (Co-investigator)
- Knowledge exchange activity focused on the application of risk analysis methodologies to braking systems in nuclear submarines. The project involved translating academic approaches in reliability and risk modelling to an industrial context, supporting the evaluation of system performance, safety, and decision-making under uncertainty. The collaboration led to the commissioning of six MSc dissertation projects based on real-world industrial challenges.
- 01-Jan-2024 - 01-Jan-2024
- Hauzenberger, Niko (Principal Investigator) Bueno Macedo Medeiros, Cynthia (Co-investigator) Koop, Gary (Co-investigator)
- 2026 Student Excellence Awards (SEA) under the John Anderson Research
Studentship Scheme (JARSS): 拢134,525 - 01-Jan-2026 - 01-Jan-2029
- Bueno Macedo Medeiros, Cynthia (Principal Investigator) MacInnes, Don (Co-investigator)
- Knowledge exchange activity focused on applying management science to strategic decision-making challenges within the UK's Defence Nuclear Enterprise, in partnership with Frazer-Nash Consultancy. The activity will result in the supervision of six commissioned postgraduate dissertation projects addressing defence procurement, nuclear supply chains, strategic investment appraisal, consortium bidding, and capacity planning.
- 25-Jan-2026 - 30-Jan-2026
- Bueno Macedo Medeiros, Cynthia (Principal Investigator) Kelen, Pedro (Co-investigator)
- Knowledge exchange activity focused on supporting strategic growth decision-making for digital platform businesses addressing Uber Technologies' key operational management expansion challenges. The activity will result in the supervision of postgraduate consultancy projects addressing mergers and acquisitions, organic growth strategies, strategic investment, market entry, platform economics and business analytics.
- 03-Jan-2026 - 30-Jan-2026
- Green, Stephen (Principal Investigator) Bueno Macedo Medeiros, Cynthia (Co-investigator)
- This project employs computational text analysis to examine the extent to which academic research on entrepreneurial ecosystems is reflected in policy discourse across the four UK nations. By comparing thematic structures in academic literature and policy documentation across multiple case study ecosystems, the project seeks to shed light on research utilisation gaps between scholars and policy-makers.
This project has been funded by Heriot-Watt University's Early Career Development programme. - 01-Jan-2026 - 30-Jan-2027
